Mathematics

The Importance of Mathematics

  • Mathematics gives children a way of coming to terms with their environment. Practical tasks and real life problems can be approached from a mathematical point of view
  • Mathematics provides children with imaginative areas of exploration and study and gives them the materials upon which to exercise their mathematical skills. These skills are a necessary tool of everyday life
  • Mathematics should help pupils to develop an appreciation of, and enjoyment in, the subject itself; as well as a realisation of its role in other curriculum areas
  • Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways
  • Mathematics is important in everyday life, many forms of employment, science and technology, medicine, the economy, the environment and
    development, and in public decision-making
  • Different cultures have contributed to the development and application of mathematics. Today, the subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised
  • Mathematics is a creative discipline. It can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder when a pupil solves a problem for the first time, discovers a more elegant solution to that problem, or suddenly sees hidden connections

Horndale County Infant and Nursery School vision for Mathematics

We wish to develop children’s fluency and reasoning in solving real life mathematical problems, ensuring continuity and progression for every child, thereby instilling a sense of enjoyment and curiosity through the use of cross curricular links.

So what do we mean by this?

  • Fluency: the ability for a child to seamlessly choose the correct strategy to solve mathematical operations
  • Reason: the ability to follow a line of enquiry and begin to express their arguments formally.
  • Continuity and progression: to ensure continuous development of the child’s knowledge and understanding through planning, monitoring, and
    assessing.
  • Cross curricular: to create opportunities for children to practice and apply the skills they learn through mathematics lessens across other areas of the
    curriculum.
