Reading in Reception

During Reception children will do the following to develop their early reading skills:

  • Enter a classroom which has a variety of books and labels to encourage children to begin to read
  • Listen to stories on a tape and use the pictures to follow the story
  • Read books which are of various genres
  • Learn to read their own name by finding their peg, self-registration and finding their file to put work in
  • Choose a book when the child enters the classroom prior to registration
  • Weekly Library time, when children take a book home
  • Learn the Oxford Reading Tree characters and begin storytelling from non-worded books
  • Develop reading skills to begin reading worded books
  • Learn Phase 2 and 3 from the Letters and Sounds programme
  • Being to blend sounds in words to read simple words
  • Learn High Frequency words and Action words by sight
  • Use the story chair to develop storytelling and story structure
