Reading

Basic Literacy skills are ever present throughout our curriculum. They will develop a real love of books where every child will learn to read and be successful at reading.

‘Teach a child to read and keep that child reading and we will change everything – And I mean everything.’ – Jeanette Winterson

At Horndale our pupils learn to read effectively and quickly using the Read Write Inc. programme. You can find out more by visiting Read Write Inc

Using RWI, the children learn to read effortlessly so they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read.

The children are assessed regularly and grouped according to their ability. They will work with a RWI trained teacher or teaching assistant.

The Read Write Inc Lead at Horndale is Mrs Copeland. If you have any questions or need any guidance on the programme, please pop in to the school office or give us a call and they will arrange a meeting for you.

We make sure that pupils read books that are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and the common exception words. This is so that, early on, they experience success and gain confidence that they are readers. Re-reading and discussing these books with the teacher supports their increasingly fluent decoding.

Pupils in Year 2 who have completed Read Write Inc. Phonics and who can read with accuracy, then move onto Accelerated Reading.
